We’d like to share a brief history of our farm market with you. Bill and Bette Johnson purchased the farm in 1953. At the time, Lenape High School, which is now across the street from the farm, was not yet constructed. As a way to sell their delicious sweet corn, Bill came up with the idea of loading a flat wagon with corn and pulling it to the corner of Church and Hartford Road. He took a chance and began to slowly pull the wagon back and forth, enticing people to stop by and purchase a few ears. This progressed to Bill leaving the wagon and working on the honor system. Bill and Bette then constructed a roadstand 1969. As the business grew, so did the roadstand, and an addition was made in 1987. Our largest renovation took place in 2007. We were able to incorporate the existing framework of the roadstand, and it is now the checkout area of our farm market. Keeping our farm market genuinely historic is extremely important to us.
While starting their business, Bill and Bette were blessed with three children: Hille, Eric, and Peter. Hille was active in the roadstand as a teenager and throughout college. Eric and Pete were also involved as young boys, and today they run the farm and market with the help of their wives and children. Bill and Bette still come to work every day. Thirteen members of the Johnson family help keep the business going on a daily basis.
